Carmen Beckford

Renewal has been asked to perform at an evening celebration for the life of Carmen Beckford Friday 17 June at City Hall, Bristol at 6.30pm. Miss Beckford, who came to the UK from Jamaica aged 17, was a prominent race equality campaigner. The former midwife, who was the first black recipient of an MBE in the South West, died at a care home in Bristol last month. She was a founder member of the St Pauls Carnival committee, which was set up in 1967 and was appointed the first Race Relations Officer in Bristol and helped improve racial equality in the city.
